Tarek H. Shahbandar, MD, is a devoted and seasoned physician who brings the necessary warm-hearted diligence, time, and respect to the practice of interventional pain medicine. Dr. Shahbandar helps men and women relieve pain and amplify wellness at the Pain Physicians of Indiana, P.C., located in Merrillville, Indiana.

Dr. Shahbandar was born in Michigan and raised in Wisconsin. He attended the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee before completing a residency and fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. At the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, Dr. Shahbandar had the privilege to train under some of the world’s most prestigious pioneers in pain medicine. He also spent three years training physicians at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Dr. Shahbandar has been practicing interventional pain medicine since 2005 and founded the Pain Physicians of Indiana, P.C., in 2011. He’s board certified in pain medicine and anesthesiology and has a special interest in complex regional pain syndrome and the spine. He treats acute and chronic pain and a range of other health conditions.

Recognized for his authentic and kind bedside manner and exceptional procedural skills, Dr. Shahbandar always focuses on alleviating pain while minimizing the use of controlled substances and pain medicines. He provides effective treatments methods, including spinal cord stimulation and uses the latest advanced technology, tools, systems, and equipment, such as Stimwave and Nevro®.

Dr. Shahbandar knows that daily challenges with pain can be overwhelming and relief can seem out of reach. He truly cares for his patients and works to find the root cause of their conditions and deliver valuable education on lifestyle changes that can significantly improve the quality of their lives. Solving the root cause is his ultimate goal beyond just masking and diminishing the pain.
